One of my favorite things to do is walk around capturing collections of Atlanta urban photography. I love capturing the most instagrammable spots in town, but my favorite thing to explore are a few streets over from where everyone takes pictures.
For example, this is one of the most famous views of Atlanta: Jackson Street Bridge.
Most people have seen this view of the Atlanta skyline thanks to its being featured in the Walking Dead poster. It is very unlikely that you are ever at this view alone. I’ve seen people even lug out lights and equipment for high-paid photoshoots. It’s not hard to see why. It’s beautiful!
But what I really enjoy doing is walking around the Freedom Plaza and Auburn Ave. Other than spending a moment paying my respects to Dr. King and Coretta, walking the streets where artists have painted beautiful and powerful backdrops has become a pasttime of mine.
The art found in Atlanta is so beautiful and raw. I love how reflective of Atlanta culture it is. I especially love that there are pieces that make you think about how things are and how they should be. For example, my favorite building art was this collection of walls.
I love the message. Education is elevation. If we do not educate ourselves and others, we will never rise above oppression and adversity. And the piece continues to critique the education system for its poor representation of Black America and the history of abuse and oppression and even execution in this country. I love art that makes a statement, and this one got to me.
After I have walked all around the side streets, I really enjoy heading over to underground for some more long exposures. I love this spot on top of the parking deck. It has really great colors and lighting at night!
