Atlanta Neighborhoods with Just a 35mm Lens

This is the last week of videos and photos of my time exploring Atlanta armed only with a 35mm lens. I love my 35mm. Shooting with it has been where I’ve historically felt the most comfortable. On the crop sensor camera, the Nikon D5600, a 35mm acts like a 50mm. And if you know anything about photography, you might have already heard of the nifty fifty!

Last week, I had pretty much gotten a little lost. I was going for the Oakland Cemetery entrance from the MARTA station. When I should have turned left, I turned right. I ended up walking the entire perimeter, but I finally made it into the perimeter and fired a couple of dope shots.

After the cemetery, I decided to walk the local neighborhood between the cemetery and the Grant Park/Atlanta Zoo area. I was so fortunate to find some gorgeous trees blooming very vibrantly in the park and in front of someone’s home!

The last thing I shot was this gorgeous bike that was parked on the street. I actually ended up staying there for a minute shooting the bike. It was so pretty despite being covered in pollen! But I suppose that’s the tradeoff for an Atlanta spring!

Finally, I hopped back on the MARTA and rode back to my car. Before I got off the train, as it was arriving at my station, I snapped this picture. I love the look of a train, especially in black and white.

All of these photos are available for prints!

Guest Writer | Kenneth Forrester

My love for photography and filmmaking has allowed me to meet some amazing people. I have been so delighted to share my stories and my experiences. Today is different. Kenneth Forrester is a filmmaker that I’ve had the pleasure to work with on a couple of projects now, so I thought it would be a good idea, and Kenneth agreed, to share his powerful story! Thanks for sharing, my friend!

Hopping the MARTA for my Photography

I love subways, photography, and my beautiful home city Atlanta. So this week, I spent some time getting to know my city in the only way I know how… An urban Photo Hike. I decided to grab a day pass for the MARTA and go wherever the Orange Line takes me, which ended up being from the Airport to Doraville! Anyways, here is SOME of my collection. But ALL of my collection can be seen on allorastudios.com where I also have prints available for purchase.

Atlanta Urban Photography

One of my favorite things to do is walk around capturing collections of Atlanta urban photography. I love capturing the most instagrammable spots in town, but my favorite thing to explore are a few streets over from where everyone takes pictures.

For example, this is one of the most famous views of Atlanta: Jackson Street Bridge.

Most people have seen this view of the Atlanta skyline thanks to its being featured in the Walking Dead poster. It is very unlikely that you are ever at this view alone. I’ve seen people even lug out lights and equipment for high-paid photoshoots. It’s not hard to see why. It’s beautiful!

But what I really enjoy doing is walking around the Freedom Plaza and Auburn Ave. Other than spending a moment paying my respects to Dr. King and Coretta, walking the streets where artists have painted beautiful and powerful backdrops has become a pasttime of mine.

The art found in Atlanta is so beautiful and raw. I love how reflective of Atlanta culture it is. I especially love that there are pieces that make you think about how things are and how they should be. For example, my favorite building art was this collection of walls.

I love the message. Education is elevation. If we do not educate ourselves and others, we will never rise above oppression and adversity. And the piece continues to critique the education system for its poor representation of Black America and the history of abuse and oppression and even execution in this country. I love art that makes a statement, and this one got to me.

After I have walked all around the side streets, I really enjoy heading over to underground for some more long exposures. I love this spot on top of the parking deck. It has really great colors and lighting at night!

I hope that you have enjoyed this collection of Atlanta urban photography because I enjoyed capturing and creating it. With so much to shoot around me, you can count on more like this. All of these photos are available for prints via this link.

If you are interested in doing portraits with me in any of the places featured in the Atlanta Urban Photography collection, use this contact form. For videos use this form. I look forward to shootin’ ya!

March 2020 Moment a Day

March 2020 coronavirus

A “Moment a Day” video for March 2020 took an eerie turn as the world began to deal with COVID-19 as a global pandemic.

A simple project by Photographer/Videographer Samuel Presley turns into an eerie testament to the times as the global community collectively shuts down due to the March 2020 Coronavirus pandemic.

Roma | There’s Almost Nothing Truly Spanish About These Steps

La Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti, as the Italians call them, are not quite as Spanish as the English name implies. roman, roman architecture, roman ruins, rome, roma, roma italy, palatine hill, roman forum, roman forum photography, roman forum pictures, roman forum images, arch, arches, roman structures, italy, italian, italian winery, italiano, italiana, italia, travel photography, travel, travel hack, travel hacking, travel affordability, affording travel, budget traveling, traveling, world traveling, photographer, travel photographer, photography, travel photography, atlanta photography, atlanta photographer, architectural photography, architectural photographer, italian photography, photography italia, allora studios, le scale spagne, spanish steps, spanish steps rome, spanish steps roma, spanish steps rome italy,

The Spanish Steps

Here’s the deal. At the top of the steps there’s a monastery built around 1494 because of Pope Alexander VI and a church beside it built in 1502 because of Louis XII of France after he successfully invaded Naples.

During his time as Pope, Pope Gregory XIII had some drawings made for a set of stairs to the church and monastery. Then Cardinal Mazarin took interest when the French Diplomat Geuffier allocated money for the stairs in his will. When he died in 1661, since the project included a statue that Romans saw as a French intrusion to the Eternal City and a nephew of Gueffier successfully contested the will and received half the funds, the project for the steps died with him.roman, roman architecture, roman ruins, rome, roma, roma italy, palatine hill, roman forum, roman forum photography, roman forum pictures, roman forum images, arch, arches, roman structures, italy, italian, italian winery, italiano, italiana, italia, travel photography, travel, travel hack, travel hacking, travel affordability, affording travel, budget traveling, traveling, world traveling, photographer, travel photographer, photography, travel photography, atlanta photography, atlanta photographer, architectural photography, architectural photographer, italian photography, photography italia, allora studios, le scale spagne, spanish steps, spanish steps rome, spanish steps roma, spanish steps rome italy,

It was revived when Pope Clement XI Albani showed interest. A competition ensued and Francesco de Sanctis became the architect of the stairs. Over the years, the steps have been restored many times.

So the “Spanish Steps” are actually a French creation. We call them the Spanish steps because of the piazza at the bottom of them. The Piazza di Spagna is called so because of the Spanish Embassy that resides there. So the Spanish Steps are actually a French-funded, Italian-designed structure.roman, roman architecture, roman ruins, rome, roma, roma italy, palatine hill, roman forum, roman forum photography, roman forum pictures, roman forum images, arch, arches, roman structures, italy, italian, italian winery, italiano, italiana, italia, travel photography, travel, travel hack, travel hacking, travel affordability, affording travel, budget traveling, traveling, world traveling, photographer, travel photographer, photography, travel photography, atlanta photography, atlanta photographer, architectural photography, architectural photographer, italian photography, photography italia, allora studios, le scale spagne, spanish steps, spanish steps rome, spanish steps roma, spanish steps rome italy,

The fountain in the piazza is called the Fontana della Barcaccia, or fountain of the longboat. It was built between 1627-1629 by Bernini. Pietro Bernini is most famous for fathering the really famous architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini. It’s recently been proposed that the two even collaborated on the project. Folklore dictates that Pope Urban VIII was so impressed by a boat along the Tiber that he had the fountain installed.roman, roman architecture, roman ruins, rome, roma, roma italy, palatine hill, roman forum, roman forum photography, roman forum pictures, roman forum images, arch, arches, roman structures, italy, italian, italian winery, italiano, italiana, italia, travel photography, travel, travel hack, travel hacking, travel affordability, affording travel, budget traveling, traveling, world traveling, photographer, travel photographer, photography, travel photography, atlanta photography, atlanta photographer, architectural photography, architectural photographer, italian photography, photography italia, allora studios, le scale spagne, spanish steps, spanish steps rome, spanish steps roma, spanish steps rome italy,

As you can see from my pictures, this place is crowded. It was really hard to move around the piazza. It’s definitely a gorgeous spot visit. Don’t bring a lunch and expect to have a picnic on the steps. Even if the tourism in this spot would allow it, Roma says you can’t do so. They have a few guards keeping a close eye on all visitors.

When you visit the Roman Forum, you usually visit the Palatine Hills, too. Chances are that most visitors see them together because they are connected! There’s not a divider between them. You essentially keep walking through one until you’re inside of the other. They say it is less of a wait to get into the Palatine entrance, but I waited just as long.

Fortunately, despite being May, my fiancée and I were able to stay cool with the fresh water fountains that were scattered among some of the ruins in Palatine Hills. There were endless ruins with thousands of years worth of history. So I will pick a few of my favorites and tell you a little bit about the history and purpose of the structure.

Known for being an icon of the Roman Forum, this is the Temple of Castor and Pollux. According to Roman legend, when the last king of Rome and the Latins attacked Rome, the Roman Republic dictator Aulus Postumius Albus Regillensis vowed to erect a temple for the Dioscuri if the Republic prevailed.

When the battle ensued, the twin gods Castor and Pollux joined the fight, leading the Republic to victory! After the battle, the gods were said to appear in the forum, watering their horses. The temple was built close to where they were said to have appeared.

It was built in 495 BCE.

The Temple of Antoninus Pius and Faustina was constructed in 141 AD. Antoninus Pius had it dedicated to his late wife. He deified her when she died. After Antoninus Pius died, he was deified and the temple was rededicated to both the emperor and his wife.

It was converted to a Christian church, called Chiesa di San Lorenzo in Miranda, some time during the Medieval period. It’s said that Miranda came from benefactors and the martyr Saint Lawrence was sentenced there, hence the name.

I’ve talked about it before, but when visiting Rome, I recommend purchasing tickets for the colosseum, forum, and Palatine together. It’s about €12. It saves you money. There’s a little pizza and panini place just inside the Metro station that is right beside the colosseum. It’s really easy to make a day out of this. You end up being done around 3 pm, perfect for a sietsa. You’ll need one on a hot day. The lack of shade makes the ruins a really hot attraction. Stay hydrated and don’t forget the sunscreen!

Roma | Everything You Needed to Know About the Colosseum

First thing’s first. The real name of this wonder of the world is the Flavian Amphitheater. Tourists and most modern people call this place the Roman Colosseum.

This beautiful work of Roman Architecture was built around 70 to 80 AD and is still the biggest amphitheater ever built. It is made from a mixture of concrete, travertine, and tuff. It sits just across the way from the bottom of the Roman Forum, caddy corner to the Arch of Peace, and down the street from the Palatine Hills entrance.

Its construction began during the reign of Vespasian and completed by his successor Titus during the Flavian dynasty. Further restorations were made during the reign of Domatian, another member of the Flavian dynasty, insuring the name Flavian Amphitheater.
